Emoji is the Japanese term for the picture characters or emoticons used in Japanese electronic messages and webpages.

Apple have added the Emoji keyboard to all version of iOS 5 (not just the Japanese version as with previous releases), finally!

To enable this on your iP[ad|hone|od] iOS 5 device.

1. Start by launching the iOS Settings app and tapping on General settings.
   
2. Now tap Keyboard
   
3. Now tap International Keyboards.
   
4. Tap Add New Keyboard…
   
5. Scroll down till you see Emoji, and tap on that
   
6. Now we’re done, you can either tap back, or press the Home button.
   

You can now use Emoji characters whenever you’re entering text.

For example to use Emoji in the Notes application

1. Launch the Notes application and add a new note
2. To access the Emoji keyboard tap the International Keyboard icon
   
3. The first time you do this you’ll see a dialogue explaining that you can cycle through keyboard by repeatedly tapping the icon.
   
4. There are many Emoji available to you including six pages of smilies
   
5. Three pages of cute animals and plants
   
6. Seven pages of festive, and other event icons
   
7. Four pages of location and landmark icons
   
8. Five pages of other interesting characters including western zodiac and Chinese horoscope.
9. Simply tap on the emoji to insert them amongst regular text. You can tap the International Keyboard icon again to return to your regular keyboard

The size of Steve’s head was determined by how big a image I could be sure to fit to an A3 sized page with margins. I created the faces in Omnigraffle by filling 33.75mmx33.75mm squares with colours picked from the original bitmap used to skin Steve’s head in the game.

I made the 27x27x27cm cardboard box by cutting up a bunch of other cardboard boxes and sticky taping them together. To get it to fit 8yo’s head correctly the insides were padded with cut to fit polystyrene.

Updated 2011-11-23: as requested by Pete, versions of the PDF sans the black background. As the pixels are NOT flush up against each other there will always be a grid pattern of some colour – this was intentional. Anyways, here is:

• a steve head with a white background, and,
• a steve head with a pink background.

Actually I don’t know if Elena is Russian, sadly she’s doesn’t say. I sure hope she is.

Anyways, KisMAC can produce some pretty graphs/eyecandy showing wifi signal strength and number of bytes over time. With such a large number of AP’s it can get pretty trippy. So I captured some of that content at a nice 720P resolution and put them on Youtube. The audio is a bunch of different random geiger counter sounds spliced together.

I made a similar pilgrimage during my first trip around the USA back in 1997. Chris and I have taken some photos of the same locations from similar angles around the site. It’s kinda interesting to compare them (not the quality — he’s a much better photographer and I was using a crappy old Konica 35mm). Nothing much has changed.
